Burgerjournalist treft lege ziekenhuizen aan in ‘coronahotspot’ Florida, weerlegt mythe dat ze ‘volstromen’

Enkele dagen geleden schreven de media dat Florida en Texas samen goed zijn voor ongeveer een derde van alle nieuwe Amerikaanse coronabesmettingen. De gouverneur van Florida, Ron DeSantis, heeft zich meermaals verzet tegen strikte coronabeperkingen. Hij blokkeerde onder andere mondkapjesplichten op scholen. De gouverneur van Texas, Greg Abbott, vaardigde begin dit jaar een decreet uit dat boetes oplegt voor mondkapjesplichten. Ook hebben de gouverneurs vaccinpaspoorten verboden.

De media schrijven dat de ziekenhuisopnames in Florida ‘onrustwekkend snel stijgen’, terwijl nog niet de helft van de bevolking volledig is gevaccineerd. Er zouden meer dan 9000 coronapatiënten in de ziekenhuizen liggen, meer dan tijdens de piek van de tweede golf. Florida wordt dé ‘hotspot’ voor nieuwe coronabesmettingen in de VS genoemd. Is dat terecht?

Een burgerjournalist nam de proef op de som en kwam tot de ontdekking dat ziekenhuizen die volgens de media bomvol liggen met coronapatiënten, leeg zijn. Twittergebruiker DrShayPhD bezocht verschillende ziekenhuizen die in recente mediaberichten worden genoemd.

“Persbureau AP schreef een artikel waarin staat dat ziekenhuis in Cape Canaveral uitpuilt met coronapatiënten,” tweette de journalist maandag. Later veranderde AP ‘Cape Canaveral’ in ‘Orlando’. De beelden spreken voor zich:

De journalist bezocht ook drie andere ziekenhuizen in de regio: in Parrish, Viera en Rockledge. Er was nauwelijks activiteit te bespeuren.

Volgens een ander mediabericht lagen er zoveel patiënten in ziekenhuizen in Brevard County in Florida dat er tenten moesten worden opgezet. De tenten blijken leeg te zijn. De journalist maakte in één van de ziekenhuizen foto’s, die laten zien dat er weinig activiteit is.
